Mary K. Romanakis, 95, of Richeyville, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in her home six years after a major stroke. She was born Aug. 8, 1906, in Chios, Greece, a daughter of the late Louis and Angela Damiris Kozis. Mrs. Romanakis was a member of the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Monessen. She was a 28-year member of the Auxiliary of the Hancock, McCune, Horne American Legion of Post 705 of Centerville. She is fondly remembered for her cooking and baking, especially her breads and lemon soup. On June 19, 1921, she married Paul M. Romanakis, who died Oct. 28, 1996, after 75 years of marriage. Her loving and nurturing ways will always be remembered by her nine surviving children. They are Helen Romanos of Richeyville, Eva Dreucci and her husband Paul of Washington, Dora Dreucci and her husband Frank of Richeyville, Alice Ware and her husband Gaylord of Aliquippa, Angeline Sterdis and her husband Edward of Fayette City, Katrina Greene and her husband James of Derring, N.H., Mike and his wife Latha of Shreveport, La., and Alex and his wife Pamela of Washington; one brother, John Kozis; one sister, Catherine Lucas both of Newell; 21 grandchildren, James Romanos, Paulette Sprock, Mary Alice Romanos, Christina Nelum, Diane Frioni, Keith Ware, Penny Phillips, Darla Opel, Candace Gabeletto, Frank Dreucci, John Sterdis, Michael Sterdis, Jeanie Evans, Nick Romanakis, Pamela Stephens, Christina Walker, Angela Romanakis, Cynthia Romanakis, Paul Michael Romanakis, James Greene and Christopher Greene; and 34 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Paul M. Romanakis Jr., who died Nov. 10, 1990; and three brothers, Nick, Paul and James Kozis. Friends will be received from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 2830 Main St., Beallsville. A Trisagion service will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Catholic Church in Monessen. The Rev. Fr. Kosta Petrogeorge will officiate. Burial will be in Beallsville Cemetery. A Trisagion Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Spyridon Greek Catholic Church, 327 Reeves Ave, Monessen, PA, 15062.

Mayor John Kozis - 75 - (1926 - 2002)

John Kozis, 75, mayor of Newell, fell asleep in the Lord, Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Brownsville Hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1926, in McKeesport, a son of the late Lewis Kozis and Angelica Daminis. He was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Monessen. Retired from Construction Workers Local 286, Brownsville, and P&LE Railroad, Newell, Mr. Kozis was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and belonged to VFW Post 1606 in Newell. He served 14 years on Newell Borough Council, four terms as president, and newly elected as mayor and committeeman for the Democratic party for Newell Borough. Mr. Kozis enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his family, as well as hunting, fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Nick, Paul and James Kozis; and one sister, Mary Romanakis. Being such a wonderful and beloved husband, father and grandfather, he leaves to cherish in his memory his wife, Dolores M. Dominic Kozis, with whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage in August 2002; three daughters, Melody Lane Yeardie and husband Sam of Brownsville, Nicki Marie Todaro and husband Vince of Newell, and Angela Denise Germano and husband Keith of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, John L. Kozis of Imperial, and Michael A. Kozis and wife Marlene of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren, Jamie Lyn Enfield and husband Gene of Brownsville, Tara Marie Todaro of Newell and Michael John and Alexandria Nicole Germano of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Catherine Lucas of Garden City, Mich.; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Judy Dominic of Grindstone; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
